New Monumental Baptist Church
New Monumental Baptist Church was located for many years behind First
Christian Church. Around 2000, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
bought the property and the church moved to the Brainerd area, purchasing
the facilities of the former Central Baptist Church, Woodmore, which moved to
Ooltewah in 2001 and changed its name to Christ Way Community Church.
Central Baptist Church was founded in 1888, formed by members who left First
Baptist Church as a result of a dispute concerning the minister. When First
Baptist moved into its new church in 1888, Central church bought the old
frame building and moved it on logs downhill (thankfully) to a lot near the
corner of McCallie and Palmetto. The church experienced growth and, around
1905, tore down the frame building and built a new church of modified
gothic design on the SE corner of McCallie and Palmetto; the architect was
R. H. Hunt. Central Baptist held its last service at this site on May 29,
1958. The church facilities were sold to the Wann Funeral Home. Wann moved
to St. Elmo in 1964 and the building was sold to the Salvation Army. It was
badly damaged by fire in 1974.
Central Baptist moved to the Woodmore section of Brainerd in 1958. The
facility was built in stages. The Zimmer was installed in 1973 in chambers
to each side of the large choirloft. A good-size Antiphonal division was
installed on the center of the rear wall. Because the sanctuary is quite
wide and not very long, the Antiphonal actually acts as a very nice
ancillary division to the front organ. A half-length Trompette-en-Chamade
was added in the 1980s.
